Hi, I’m Amy Regan. I’m your neighbor and I want to be your next City Councilor. I believe being a good Councilor means doing all the same things good neighbors do, plus a little more. Being a good Councilor and neighbor means pitching in when the retiree down the street needs a helping hand. Or keeping an eye out when the neighborhood kids wait for the bus in the morning. It also means safeguarding the things about our lifestyle and community that I have loved, living in Oakley for the last three decades. It means being open to growth, when it’s done thoughtfully, with real consideration for the future. Above all, being a good City Councilor means listening to the people of Oakley, and standing behind my decisions when they’re made with the full input of the community.
Being a good Councilor also means being prepared to actually do the job, and I come to the City Council armed with unique skills and perspectives from a lifetime of work and service in our community.
As a member of the Oakley Planning Commission from 2002-2010, I developed a strong understanding of the way our town functions and serves its citizens. Even more impactful were the lessons I learned about collaborating with my neighbors, weighing opposing views, and finding creative solutions that serve everyone.
I have been deeply involved with the South Summit School District, as a volunteer, as a mother of two SSHS graduates, and as a member of the faculty. For the last 18 years, I have worked at the high school as the College Access & Readiness Advisor, where I have met many of you and your children as you embark on an exciting and daunting phase of life. I have a front-row seat to the challenges facing the youth of our community, and am passionate about helping our kids overcome those challenges so they can achieve their dreams. I founded and continue to advise the South Summit Interact Club, which organizes student service projects and aims to instill a lifelong love of lifting up those less fortunate. I know how integral our schools are to the community and our identity, and I’m hopeful that we can continue to invest in them to help us all succeed.
Like so many of you who understand that what makes our town special is often just the people who show up, I’ve been a part of many events and projects as a member of the Oakley Civic Club. To me, these events are the fabric that knit our community together and make this town a great place to live. From working the concession shacks at the rodeo and local softball games, to hiding Easter eggs for the annual hunt, to picking up trash on the highway, I’m proud to have helped the Civic Club continue to be a pillar of our community and grateful for how it has connected me to all of you.
I moved to Summit County 45 years ago after graduating from college. I wasn’t born here, but I’ve been here long enough to have seen where we came from, and to worry about where we’re going. I’ve talked to high school students who won’t be able to afford a home in the town where they grew up, and seen firsthand the heartbreak of an older citizen forced to go outside the county to find a retirement home. I’ve seen development and conservation, helped build trails, raised kids and made friends. The problems we face aren’t insurmountable and the opportunities we have are exciting, as long as we work together and listen to one another.
I am honored to call Oakley my home and to have built a life with my family here. I want to give back to the community that has given me so much. I want to help guide our little town into the future without sacrificing the rural way of life we all love. Most importantly, I want to lead with kindness, common sense, and reliability. All the things, in short, that you want in your neighbors.
Please vote Amy Regan for Oakley City Council.
